Studying abroad is exciting, but it also involves costs that need to be covered in advance. Below is an overview of the fees and costs required to study at IHS. Please be aware that there can be other costs per individual case that are not mentioned below, such as (international) travel expenses, study materials, field visits, etc.

Deposit of living costs (for those who need to apply for a student visa & residence permit) This deposit will be refunded monthly after the programme starts. A full sponsorship letter can serve as proof of living costs instead of sending the deposit in some cases. Please consult the Admissions office by sending your sponsorship letter for more advice.

The following fees and costs apply to all PhD full-time researchers. The totals below reflect the costs of an individual completing research full-time at IHS for four years.

Health insurance | Approx. €65* per month | The PhD student arranges their own health insurance directly with the company and pays the invoice directly. IHS recommend two suppliers for researchers and PhD students, these are AON and Insure To Study. If you have any questions about health insurance, please email PhD_admin@ihs.nl after your place in our programme has been confirmed.

Entry visa + residence permit costs | €243* | If you stay in the Netherlands for more than 90 days, you will need an MVV visa together with a residence permit. IHS PhD programme will apply for this visa for you from the Netherlands. *Actual amount can change as the Immigration office increases the fee twice a year on 1 January and 1 July. |
Minimum monthly living costs required by the Dutch Immigration office | €1,657 singles* per month €2,367.14* families per month | If you need to apply for an MVV visa, you must provide proof that your living costs meet the IND income requirement. Please note that the exact documentation required may differ based on individual circumstances. For guidance on the required proof in your situation, please contact the Admissions Office. Once you have been admitted into the programme, our PhD Programme Administrator will contact you to discuss the specific documentation required for your visa application. Please be aware that the IND adjusts the required financial proof twice a year, on January 1 and July 1, which may impact the amount you need to demonstrate. |
