IHS, the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies of Erasmus University Rotterdam and the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (ESSB) are launching a new MSc. programme together. This one-year, full-time programme is a unique collaboration between the institutes and awards a Master of Science in Public Administration: Urban Governance Specialisation. The course will combine the excellent reputation of ESSB in governance studies and public management with IHS’s awarding-winning (UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour), 60 year history in the field of urban management.
The curriculum is designed to help students develop interdisciplinary expertise in analysing and tackling urban governance issues. It integrates and combines knowledge from public administration, political science, urban economy, sociology and urban planning. It enables participants to gain knowledge on current trends, topics, innovations and tools from various disciplines in the field of urban governance (such as the circular economy, place-making, co-production, self-organisation etc.)

This new Master’s specialisation offers an opportunity to learn how to develop innovative urban policies and appropriate management strategies that harness the potential of cities.” said Dr. Ingmar van Meerkerk, coordinator of the programme.
To gain admission to the programme, students must:
- Hold a Bachelor’s or undergraduate degree from a research university in one of the relevant fields of studies.
- Be able to present evidence of sufficient command of English;
- Meet all the requirements on the programme Admissions page.
The following fields are considered relevant:
- Public Administration;
- Political Science;
- Sociology.
Under certain conditions these fields of studies will also be considered relevant:
- Economics;
- Environmental Sciences;
- Urban Management;
- Urban Planning;
- Urban Studies.
