From 23 November to 4 December 2020, IHS and the Cities Alliance staff executed an online training to Liberian government officials; the training focused on a priority theme in Liberian cities: solid waste management. The training was financed by Cities Alliance with funds from the European Union.
The participants included 19 staff from the Monrovia and Paynesville City Corporations, the Environmental Protection Agency, National Housing Authority, National Water, Sanitation and Hygiene - WASH Commission, National Association of Community Based Enterprises, the University of Liberia, the Liberian Institute of Public Administration, and Habitat for Humanity.
The training involved a mixture of video presentations, discussion groups, zoom sessions and group work on the development of a SWM action plan in Peace Island in Monrovia. After a visit to the site to perform a rapid appraisal, the groups were divided to focus on:
- Group 1: Infrastructure and Accessibility (road, water, and energy) related to solid waste
- Group 2: Economy development/employment potential in solid waste (formal and informal)
- Group 3: Environmental Quality and Health related to solid waste
- Group 4: Social Cultural aspects of solid waste
The groups presented their integrated action plan on 4 December to an audience of colleagues and the funding agency. The hope is that they can implement portions of the action plan in the future.
