The "Redesigning the Post-Industrial City (MSc RePIC)" programme calls upon the future generation of urban thinkers eager to stimulate the revitalisation of post-industrial cities. IHS is part of this inter-university joint postgraduate programme developed by UNIC, The European University of Post-Industrial Cities, designed to address the complexities of revitalising post-industrial cities. The programme combines a multidisciplinary approach, integrating urban studies, economics, and social sciences.

Shaping education: From research to curriculum design

Merav Kaddar, the educational programme manager and urban researcher at IHS, contributed significantly to creating and developing this dynamic and unique educational experience. Her research on urban agency, mainly how individuals and communities influence urban spaces, provided valuable insights. This innovative curriculum prepares students to tackle challenges like socioeconomic inequality, spatial decay, and urban regeneration in cities transitioning from industrial to knowledge-based economies.

"Contributing to international projects has given me a deeper understanding of the complexities of urban challenges from both political and cultural angles and has highlighted the tensions between practice and academia."

– Merav Kaddar

By incorporating real-world cases and artistic interventions in urban politics, Merav helped ensure that the programme fosters critical thinking and practical applications. The RePic programme exposes students to diverse global perspectives and equips them with tools to drive meaningful urban transformations, making it a unique educational experience in a post-industrial context.

Redesigning the future: Navigating super-diversity, innovation and resilience

"A post-industrial city typically refers to an urban area that has shifted from a manufacturing-based economy to one driven by services, technology, and knowledge industries. This transition impacts the city spatially, socially, and politically", says Merav Kaddar.

The RePic master's programme equips students with the knowledge and skills to navigate this complex landscape. It explores socioeconomic inequality, urban regeneration, and environmental sustainability while addressing concepts of super-diversity, innovation, and resilience.

This master's will allow students to experience different cultures, languages, and diverse learning environments while benefitting from expertise from the eight universities contributing actively to the 24-month programme. Through an interdisciplinary approach, students engage in innovative learning methods that blend theoretical insights with practical experiences, including workshops, field visits, and collaborative projects. This immersive education fosters critical thinking and equips future urban leaders to implement effective strategies for transforming post-industrial urban areas into vibrant, inclusive spaces.

Building resilient cities: Future urban experts

The RePic master's programme opens diverse career prospects in urban planning, policy-making, and community development, providing graduates with the skills to address pressing challenges in post-industrial cities. As cities evolve, there is an increasing demand for professionals facilitating sustainable urban transformations. The programme emphasises collaboration, drawing on the expertise of IHS and its partners to grant students a rich, interdisciplinary education. This collaborative framework enhances their ability to implement effective strategies and foster innovation in an urban environment.
